Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Upgrades to equipment grant an increase in the item's stats. The bonus increases with upgrade component's level and rarity.
Components
Upgrade components can make your armour and weapons stronger. You can acquire them by destroying enemies, finding them in item spheres, or buying them from karma merchants. They can also be salvaged from equipment that has them or by using an advanced salvage kit such as the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. Upgrade components aren't destroyed by removing them from an item.
Upgrade components are mostly used to upgrade an item but they can also be used for other purposes. They can be stacked to boost the value of an upgradeable item or they can be used to boost the amount of experience gained from upgrading an existing weapon or piece of gear. They can also be made to offer additional benefits. A glyph that is crafted can boost the chance of upgrading its target, while an upgrade boosts the defense or attack capabilities of the weapon.
You can attach an upgrade template to an item by selecting it from the edition GUI. This will show a list of upgrade components that the item can be upgraded to. Alternatively, you can use the workbench to select an upgrade template. In either case, the item will be upgraded after enough upgrade components have been collected.
Each component is assigned an experience multiplier. This determines the amount of experience an item will gain when upgraded using the component. For instance, organic components give more experience multipliers than mechanical ones. It is recommended to upgrade your organic components first until you reach the next level in the weapon or equipment then switch to mechanical upgrades.
Each item comes with an upgrade limit number that can be received. The number of upgrades available is determined by the rank that can be upgraded and the type of upgrade for the upgradeable item. For example, the highest possible weapon upgrade is a tier 10 weapon. However, the most common upgrades for weapons are an tier 6 weapon as well as an armor upgrade of tier 5.
Sets
A set is a set of items that share the same bonus. Each item in the set can be upgraded at least once, and the upgrade increases the guaranteed bonuses. They are non-refundable. The upgraded item will have the same benefits of the previous one however its stats will differ also.
In addition to rerolling objects, players can also change the identity of any equipment by engaging with an upgrader NPC. This will change the identity from a weapon to armor or vice versa, while retaining its base stats and required attributes. The change is permanent and will affect all characters that own the gear in question.
The player can also upgrade the level of an item for any equipment that is equipped. This is done by interacting with an upgrader NPC and obtaining upgrade components.
